Ninja Hattori-kun is one of the most watched anime television series in India. The original 1981 TV Asahi anime adaptation was broadcast on Nickelodeon India in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu. It became very popular in that country, so much so that the 2013 remake of the anime was produced by Asahi along with the Indian animation studios Reliance MediaWorks and Green Gold Animations which was further dubbed into English.[1][2][3] Though the anime has become popular, the manga has not been licensed or distributed in India.

Nickelodeon India, which broadcast Ninja Hattori-kun for twelve years, also broadcast the anime's movie adaptation in regional languages.[4] However, the anime was moved from the main Nickelodeon channel (also from Nickelodeon HD+) to its offshoot, Nickelodeon Sonic.[5]

A substantive fan fiction and meme community has since emerged covering slice of life and other India-specific topics. In late 2017, a Nickelodeon India Teacher's Day commercial about dabbing which briefly featured Hattori and Kenichi became a viral meme.[6]
